Business cards are so important when it comes to networking. They provide prospects with our contact info and, more importantly, a lasting impression. These are the steps to building a brand each freelancer needs to go through.

Today I am pleased to announce that I have finally got V-card for Fasttrackcreations.com.

I wanted to keep it simple and also wanted to keep brand message consistent. I kept in mind to keep the look on the card same as the look of my website.

The most important thing while designing any print material is branding which has to be consistent.

Let me know what you think about it.

A few years ago, making fixed width designs was a fashion, rather a norm because it was more convenient. As time passed and people started using internet on their cell phones and net books, the fashion of going width a fixed width design seems outdated. A flexible layout is one that is proportional with the dimensions of the largest and the smallest devices they may be used on.

We can understand the advantages of flexible layouts, but there are many advantages of fixed sheet layouts too. To start with, fixed sheets layouts are easier and faster to design. The content does not overflow and the sheets don’t break. Even though fixed width layouts may have a number of advantages, flexible layouts are set to be a trend in the near future.

Every year new devices are launched and trends are changed. In 20120 when iPad was launched, it became a craze and designers understood the necessity of designing layouts that are suitable for the iPad. In future we would see new devices and customizing each fixed sheet layout to fit the new screen is going to be an uphill task. This is when the advantages of a flexible layout come in. Break points can be created in flexible layouts for the most popular screen sizes.

Another reason for using flexible layouts is the rapidly changing laptop and computer screen sizes. While 10 years back about 4% users had a screen size larger than 1024×768, the figure now sits at above 80%. Having flexible layouts would do away with the hassles of changing the fixed style layouts for the rapidly changing screen sizes as one layout would be suitable for all or at least most of the sizes. A flexible design allows the minimization of white space and the optimization of font sizes. A flexible layout would be suitable for most of the net books and most of the computer screen sizes without compromising on design principles.

Many users do not use their browsers at the maximised screen. There are many reasons for this practice which include the comfortable snap feature available in Windows 7 which allows two WebPages to be placed together. There are many more such features in different operating systems because of which users do not use their browsers at maximised size. It is important that the websites can fit into the reduced sizes without compromising on the clarity, which is possible with flexible layouts.

Touch screens are becoming more and more popular with the day. While designers have realised that the scroll feature needs to be eliminated if the web pages are to be browsed on the mobile screens, there is one more fundamental feature that needs to be introduced if the web pages are to be made suitable for touch screens, that is simplicity. Flexible layouts are suitable in this case as the web pages can be optimized as the screen sizes become smaller.

In the past few years we have seen many new devices being launched and as this explosion of new devices continues, it will become even more important to accommodate all the screen sizes being launched, something that can be achieved with the help of flexible layouts.

You can either create as a designer or an artist. While a designer chooses the paths that have already been specified, an artist describes his own path. There are pros and cons of each approach. Before you choose an approach for yourself, it is important that you clearly understand the difference between an artist and a designer.

A designer is a person who goes by the set rules. They are basically trained and have vast knowledge about the rules. An artist is someone who is not much trained. They choose to create their own ways and have a basic knowledge about the rules that have been set.

Choose your path

There must be something that created your interest in computer graphics. Knowing the reason which made you take this job can help you choose your approach. For example, if you were intrigued by the colours, designs and pictures and wanted to create some yourself than you should go with the designer approach and if you chose the profession to earn money than you should go with the designer approach. You can also choose the designer path if you are not very creative.

Analyse your strengths

Everyone has some strength and some weaknesses. You can never compete others in the field without capitalising on your strengths. Use your strengths to your advantage. Build around your strength. If you are not good in some areas, this does not mean that you should not use them at all, it’s just that capitalising on your strengths will give you an advantage. A designer would try to gain expertise in all fields while an artist would go with his strengths and then find out ways in which he can put his other limited skills to good use.

Being a one man army

Every new suit of adobe would make you believe that you can handle everything alone. You can go with this approach if you are not dealing with very demanding clients, demanding clients would seek expertise in all the services that they get. A designer would try to gain knowledge and learn everything so that he can do all the stuff himself. An artist would choose his area of expertise and capitalise on it. He would than gain knowledge on other things so that he can put them to use o make his work better.

Knowing the standards

A designer would have knowledge of all the standards by heart while an artist would choose to ignore them so that he can explore territories that have not been discovered. The fact is that standards are important an artist too. If you do not have any knowledge about the standards, you may end up creating stuff that is excellent but is junk because it cannot be used to perfection. It’s better to know the standards beforehand so that you don’t end up create something that is not worth your effort.

Self taught vs School

Let’s get it straight, ‘school kills creativity’. A designer would go with the conventional method of learning things while an artist would choose to be self taught so that he can be creative with his work. By the time you get your degree in your hand, you would be used to putting your mind in the designing direction and not in the artist direction

The approach you choose is ultimately going to affect whom you work with and what you are known for in the field. So keep all the above things in the mind and choose wisely.

There are a number of reasons why detail is important in a design. A detail can make the difference between an excellent design and a good design.

The reason for designing

Why design when you are creating something that is not appealing. As a designer you want to create something that is appealing and putting details in your design helps you make it more appealing for the client and for the users of course.

Keep the user in mind

Your design should be crystal clear for the user. Detail elements are more important for the user than the design elements. You should understand that details would help with better understand about the working of things on the web. The user is looking for information and putting details would ensure that he gets the information he is looking for. While the look can be appealing, a look without details is not going to solve the purpose for the user.

Know your target audience

What platform is your target audience going to use? Knowing the answer to this question can be really helpful while putting details in the design. Don’t make your audience thing too hard while looking at your design. Make sure that you have created something that your audience would understand easily.

No detail equals ineffective work

The question that each designer has on his mind is whether the absence of details makes his work ineffective. The answer to this question would always remain debatable. In some cases this may be false. The design may work just fine without details. In some other cases it may be true as the client might be looking for more details than you originally put in your work.

Don’t put too much detail

Designers sometimes fall in this trap. Putting too many details can actually cause over simulation. You should give sufficient attention to the details, but ensure that you do not end up overdoing things. You should only add details that seem to add value to your design.

The central theme of any user interface should be simplicity. Many designers think that simple UI is important only when you are designing something that is to be used on a mobile. This is not entirely true because simplicity is important for any user interface and not just for mobile.

Here are some tips that can help you create a simple and clutter free UI. You can put these tips to use while designing the UI of anything, be it a mobile app or a website.

1. Putting videos in the UI can be really cool but you should avoid them when they start interfering with the job. Videos consume a lot of bandwidth and are likely to hinder with the browsing experience, which may make your customers turn to your competitors. Avoid using Flash or bother such formats that are not compatible in all devices.

2. People have started browsing on the go using their laptops, mobiles and tablet PCs. Make sure that you do not use any fonts or colours that fiddle with the user experience. Too small fonts or flashy colours can cause problems for your users.

3. A special tip while designing apps for mobiles. Mobile sites should never have an option to scroll. Scrolling on a mobile device can cause a lot of trouble for the user. The more trouble it cause, the more are the chances that the user may stop using it all together. You should also make sure that the links that you put for clicking are large enough to click without zooming, especially when the app is designed for touch screens.

A simple and clutter free UI is important for every platform. The user should get what he is looking for. In a simple UI, the user would be able to find what he is looking for more easily while in a cluttered website, browsing would become difficult. Choose a simple UI so that your design solves its purpose.

If you are an amateur developer, you would probably be confused about where to start and which direction to follow as you would be working in a broad field where you can choose from a number of options. You should know exactly how to get an edge over other developers.

You should choose your specialization. Do not try to be a jack of all trades, choose one programming language and become a master of it. PHP, ASP.net, Java, C++ etc. there are many options around, just choose the language that suits you most. You should choose one language because you cannot actually master two languages at a time. If you are confused which language to choose in the beginning, try to choose what you want to develop and then choose a language according to it.

For example, you can choose PHP if you want to develop wordpress themes. No matter which language you choose, make sure you learn it using the latest web standards. It might sound useless to some, but it is the right method to make a grip on any language. Learn the basic language first and then move on to the advanced or cooler versions.

If you stumble on some problem, don’t waste a lot of time digging it, just visit a coding forum and you will get the perfect assistance. Coding forums are really helpful for any developer as sharing ideas, techniques and thoughts can really help you get around things well. Coding forums would also help you develop a network with people sharing your field of interest. You can even partner with one of your friends on the forum to build bigger codes.

Get yourself a professional tool to work on like Dreamweaver or Coda. Tools would really help you a lot, they would fix mistakes, auto-complete and most importantly, they would help complete the code in style.

Every amateur developer has a great potential, the very fact that you have chosen to become a developer speaks masses about your talent. Just make the right choices and you would be good to go.
